Mass diving as an entertainment and sports was started by Jacques Yves Cousteau. Just him and his friend, the French engineer Gagnan, we have to thank for the invention of the aqualung. The appearance of Cousteau's aqualung entailed the foundation of international federations and associations currently numbering millions of adepts and fans all over the world.
